After the Ram Temple opened in Ayodhya a year ago and the BJP lost the local election there many arguments over mosque and temple locations started popping up. These arguments are raising questions about a law called the Places of Worship Act. This law was made to keep religious buildings the way they were back in 1947. But now many people are fighting over who owns different places and what their religious purpose is.
Because things got so tense around these religious sites the Supreme Court stepped in last December. They made a rule saying that courts can’t accept new cases that challenge who owns a religious place. Also courts aren’t allowed to order surveys of these disputed places. This order is meant to stop the fighting from getting worse while the court looks at the Places of Worship Act. It’s like a pause button on these legal fights.
The Supreme Court’s order impacts 11 main cases about religious site disputes. These cases are now on hold until the court decides more about the Places of Worship Act. This whole situation shows that there’s a lot of religious and political tension in India especially when it comes to places of worship. This has happened partly because of a politically charged environment that questions old laws and has increased tension after a controversial temple was built.
