The Supreme Court in India stepped in on Friday to address a disagreement about a well near the Shahi Jama Masjid in Uttar Pradesh. The local city office had sent out a notice saying the well was part of a “Hari Mandir” and was going to be used for public worship and bathing. The mosque’s leaders didn’t agree and said the well has always been linked to the mosque so they challenged the notice.
Because of the mosque’s challenge the court told the Uttar Pradesh government and local leaders to not change anything about the well for now. This stops any plans for the “Hari Mandir” at the well. The court also asked the state government and local leaders to report back in two weeks about the situation.
The next court date is set for February 21st. This order by the Supreme Court means that the city office can’t do anything right away with the well. The court wants to know more before deciding anything else. The argument is about who owns the well and what religious purpose it has with both sides disagreeing.
