Supreme Court to Hear Plea on Well Near Sambhal Mosque

So like, the Shahi Jama Masjid committee in Sambhal is asking the Supreme Court to step in about this well right by the masjid. They don’t want the district magistrate doing anything with it like inspecting or opening it up, without getting permission from the Supreme Court first. Thing is, they say the local government is like, going around fixing up old temples and wells and saying they’re for religious use, and this is stirring up trouble, you know.

The committee claims that the government’s been fixing at least 32 temples and marking 19 wells for prayers, they’re even putting up posters calling the masjid area a temple. So, the committee is worried opening this well for Hindu prayers will break the peace, especially with the well being so close to the masjid entrance. They even sent a legal notice to the administration on December 16th 2024, because they were so concerned, they were getting so nervous about all of this.

Before, in November 2024, the Supreme Court said to hold off on any trial court stuff related to this, and that the case needed to be listed in the Allahabad High Court before anything else could happen. Things got heated in Sambhal after the local court ordered a survey of the masjid last year which caused people to clash with the police and some people died too. The whole thing started because someone was saying the masjid was built on what used to be a temple.
