Turkey’s foreign minister said they don’t want French troops in Syria. He said Turkey only deals with the United States in that area. This is happening while the US tries to stop Turkey from attacking Kurdish fighters. Turkey feels France ignores their safety concerns and wants France to take back their people held in Syria for being part of terrorist groups.
This all comes up because France and the US are trying to stop Turkey from attacking the Syrian Democratic Forces or SDF. The SDF helped defeat ISIS in 2019 and are seen as important by many countries to fight terrorism. However Turkey is concerned about the SDF’s links to Kurdish groups that Turkey see as terrorists and they want a safe zone on their border. This makes things tough for the US who is trying to manage different allies and their goals.
Basically Turkey thinks the SDF is connected to terrorists while the West see them as allies against ISIS. Turkey doesn’t like France getting involved because they feel their safety worries are being ignored and they are concerned about the French citizens in Syrian prisons. This shows how complicated the situation is with different countries wanting different things which makes it harder to find agreement.
