Ujjain Mosque and Homes Demolished For Temple Expansion, Sparking Resident Outcry

Ujjain Mosque and Homes Demolished For Temple

On Saturday in Ujjain, a mosque called Takiya and 257 homes in Nizamuddin Colony were taken down by local authorities. This was done to make room for the Mahakaleshwar Temple Corridor Project. Police were there to keep things safe while the demolition happened. Officials said they gave people notices and money but many residents say they did not get enough notice some claiming to receive a notice within 24 hours before the demolition or the evening before.

The people who lived in Nizamuddin Colony are the ones that lost their homes and the local Muslim community also lost the Takiya mosque they used. The local authorities in Ujjain carried out the demolition with police for security. They used big machines to tear down the buildings. Authorities say the temple project is important but residents were really upset because they didn’t think the notices and compensation were enough.

The demolition happened on a Saturday after residents say they received very short notice some within 24 hours before. The project was the reason but the way it happened and how little notice they got made people very upset and caused them to lose their homes and a place to pray.
