Kuki Worker Alleges Assault and Confinement at IIM-Bangalore Professor's Home

A 23-year-old domestic worker from Manipur has filed a police complaint alleging illegal confinement, physical assault, and denial of food by her employer’s spouse at their residence on the IIM Bangalore campus. The woman, belonging to the Kuki community, had been employed since 2019 through an agency to care for the children of Prof. Amar Sapra and his wife Anshu Sapra.

According to the complaint filed on May 6 at Mico Layout Police Station, the survivor reported that on May 4, she informed Anshu about feeling unwell, but was dismissed as "acting" and denied food from that morning. She then sought help from a neighbor, another IIM Bangalore faculty member, who provided food, rest, and a phone to contact her family.

The survivor reached out to the president of the Kuki Students Organisation Bangalore (KSOB) through a relative in Bengaluru. She filed the police complaint with assistance from KSOB and a Manipuri government official in Karnataka. The FIR was registered under Sections 115(2) and 127(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for voluntarily causing hurt and wrongful confinement.

The complaint alleges that Anshu physically assaulted her on April 15 around 2:30 am, pulling her hair and hitting her multiple times. The survivor stated she had not reported earlier due to fear. KSOB president Seilalmuon Haokip noted the organization faced difficulties in getting the FIR registered and awaited further police updates.

On May 10, police reportedly planned to visit the professor's residence and serve a notice to the accused. IIM Bangalore stated the director met with the survivor upon learning of the situation, ensuring she contacted her family and retrieved her belongings. The institute assisted her in reaching a relative's home in the city.
