Bengal Post-Poll Violence: Bomb Blasts Rock Howrah’s Shibpur, BJP and TMC Trade Charges

Political violence erupted in the Shibpur area of Howrah, West Bengal, following the Assembly election results, as clashes broke out between supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Trinamool Congress (TMC). The unrest centered in the Chaurabasti locality, where witnesses reported a chaotic scene involving the explosion of multiple crude bombs, the hurling of bricks and glass bottles, and the firing of gunshots. The attack allegedly targeted Manoj Khan, a BJP Minority Cell leader, and resulted in the vandalism of local shops and several injuries. While Howrah Police Commissioner Akhilesh Chaturvedi confirmed that the situation was brought under control and one person was injured, local residents and BJP officials claim the violence was more severe, reporting that dozens of bombs were thrown and multiple people were hospitalized. The BJP has condemned the incident, accusing the ruling TMC of orchestrating a campaign of fear to intimidate supporters following the party's election success. Howrah BJP president Gouranga Bhattacharya specifically identified a local man, Shami Ahmed, as the leader of the attack. This incident is part of a broader pattern of post-poll volatility across West Bengal; similar violence was reported in the Panihati area of North 24 Parganas, and the executive assistant to Suvendu Adhikari, Chandranath Rath, was recently shot dead in Madhyamgram. Adhikari has characterized the current state of affairs in Bengal as "Mahajungle Raj," alleging that the state government is encouraging these attacks. In response to the escalating tensions, police and Rapid Action Force personnel have deployed heavy security in sensitive areas to prevent further clashes. Law enforcement officials are currently investigating the Howrah incident by examining CCTV footage and witness testimonies to identify and arrest the perpetrators. While the government appeals for peace and stability, the state remains on high alert as political friction continues to manifest in violent confrontations across various districts.
