Putin Declines Zelenskyy's Peace Offer, Citing Lack of Progress in Ukraine War

Russian President Vladimir Putin has rejected a proposal from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for direct talks to end the ongoing war. Speaking at an economic forum in St. Petersburg, Putin stated he sees no point in such a meeting at this time. He argued that meaningful negotiations can only occur after Ukraine halts its military advances and experts draft concrete agreements.

Zelenskyy had issued an open letter urging Putin to pursue peace, but Putin dismissed parts of the letter as insincere and rude. In response, Zelenskyy accused Russia of choosing war over diplomacy, calling Putin’s reply weak and disappointing to the international community. The conflict, now in its fifth year, remains deadlocked due to Russia’s demand to keep occupied territories, which Ukraine refuses to accept.

Peace efforts have further stalled as the United States shifts focus toward the war in Iran, reducing its mediation role. While Putin previously suggested talks in Moscow or a third country, he insists any meeting must follow a ready-made deal. He maintains the war will end only once Russia achieves its objectives.

Despite mounting economic strain—including a 0.2% GDP contraction in early 2026, rising inflation, and high borrowing costs—Putin denied claims of economic collapse. He compared Russia’s situation to that of eurozone nations and emphasized building a “sovereign” economy resilient to Western sanctions.
