BJP Government in West Bengal Initiates Crackdown on Illegal Cattle Transportation and Markets

The newly formed BJP government in West Bengal has initiated its first major law-and-order campaign by ordering police to strictly enforce rules against illegal cattle transportation and unauthorized cattle markets. The directive was issued to all Superintendents of Police and Commissioners of Police shortly after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari assumed office.

According to official communications, authorities must ensure no illegal cattle movement occurs and only licensed markets operate. District police units have been instructed to shut down unapproved markets and take legal action against violators. This crackdown marks one of the BJP’s earliest administrative actions since coming to power.

During its time in opposition, the BJP had consistently accused the previous government of failing to curb cattle smuggling, especially in border regions. Senior party leaders alleged that illegal transportation was tied to organized smuggling networks and enjoyed political protection under the prior administration.

Now in power, the BJP aims to fulfill a key election promise by demonstrating swift action. Administrative sources say the government intends to send a strong message that illegal activities and smuggling will not be tolerated. Districts like Murshidabad, Malda, Birbhum, and North 24 Parganas have long been identified as high-risk corridors for such activities.

Police have been directed to intensify vehicle checks, monitor transport routes, and enhance coordination with intelligence agencies. The state also plans to boost surveillance along borders to prevent illegal cattle movement. District police units will be held accountable for enforcement and immediate action against unauthorized trading.

Previously, central agencies like the CBI and Enforcement Directorate investigated alleged smuggling networks in the state, leading to questioning and arrests of several individuals, including some linked to the Trinamool Congress. The BJP had framed cattle smuggling as both a law-and-order and national security issue during elections.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently stated that cattle smuggling would become “impossible” once BJP governments were established in eastern and northeastern states. The current directive is widely seen as the beginning of that promised crackdown.
