NHRC Investigates 60 Newborn Deaths at Malda Medical College

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of the reported deaths of at least 60 newborns at Malda Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal during the first three weeks of August 2026. The NHRC issued a notice to the West Bengal chief secretary, seeking a detailed report within two weeks. The commission stated that if the deaths are confirmed, they may indicate serious human rights violations. The West Bengal government has requested a report from the hospital to investigate the causes. Hospital authorities noted that many of the infants were referred from other facilities in critical condition, suffering from respiratory distress, jaundice, and heart problems. State Health Minister Shardwat Mukhopadhyay acknowledged a rise in the infant mortality rate and emphasized the need for a thorough investigation. Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar described the deaths as unexpected and warned of action if negligence is proven.
