NDA in Assam Stakes Claim to Form Government with 102 MLAs
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Assam, led by Chief Minister-elect Himanta Biswa Sarma, met Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on May 10 to stake claim to form the government. This will be the third consecutive NDA government in the state, with Sarma set to become the only non-Congress CM to serve two successive terms.
The NDA, comprising the BJP, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), submitted its claim with signatures from all three parties. Sarma, elected as the BJP legislative party leader and NDA leader, presented the letter to the Governor, stating support from 102 MLAs. AGP chief Atul Bora and BPF leader Rihon Daimari also submitted letters of support.
Earlier, Sarma was elected as the NDA leader in the Assam assembly. The NDA secured a two-thirds majority in the assembly polls, winning 102 seats in the 126-member House, with the BJP winning 82 seats and its allies AGP and BPF winning 10 each.
