Tremors near Tehran Renew Fears of Major Quake

Nine small earthquakes hit the Pardis area east of Tehran overnight, according to Iran's Mehr news agency. The tremors struck near the Mosha fault, one of Iran's most active seismic zones. Scientists and residents are worried these repeated events could signal a future major earthquake. Tehran sits close to several active fault lines, putting it at high risk.

The earthquakes had magnitudes up to 4.6 but caused no casualties or damage. However, they occurred in a single night, which is unusual for this area. Seismologist Mehdi Zare said the tremors may either release built-up pressure or warn of stronger quakes ahead. Neither outcome is certain at this time.

Tehran has more than 14 million people and faces serious earthquake dangers. The city is near the North Tehran, Mosha, and Rey faults. Dense buildings, large population, and poor infrastructure make it very vulnerable. Even small quakes can cause major problems due to traffic and weak emergency systems. Iran sits on multiple fault lines and faces ongoing seismic risks.
