Bihar Watermelon Poisoning: 8 Family Members Hospitalized, Police Investigate
Eight members of a single family in Bihar fell ill after eating watermelon. They experienced stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and anxiety. Family members and nearby residents rushed them to the hospital, where doctors described one person's condition as critical.
The incident occurred in Sonwarsa village under the industrial police station area in Bhasar district. Panic and shock spread among the locals after the event. The critically ill patient was referred directly to a higher center from the emergency department.
Meanwhile, treatment for seven people continues at the local hospital. According to doctors, five people have been discharged due to improvement in their health, but two women are still under medical observation.
Upon receiving information, the administration sprang into action and started an investigation. Food inspectors have been ordered to probe the matter. Medical experts stated that people currently use artificial colors like nitrate and erythrosine or chemicals like calcium carbide to ripen watermelons faster and make them appear red. These substances cause serious food poisoning in the body.
Additionally, bacteria grow rapidly in watermelons that have been cut for a long time or kept open, which increases the risk of infection. For now, the police are investigating the matter. Following the incident, the Health Department has urged people to remain cautious.
