Sambhal School Officials Suspended Over Alleged Religious Activities

In Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district, a Muslim headmaster and assistant teacher from a government primary school were arrested after viral videos showed students wearing skullcaps and hijabs and participating in Islamic prayers. The footage, from PM Shri Primary School in Jalab Sarai, included children reciting poems like “Lab Pe Aati Hai Dua” by Allama Iqbal. Authorities launched a surprise inspection on May 8 and suspended Principal Mohammad Anjar Ahmad (on leave) and Assistant Teacher Mohammad Gul Ejaz, accusing them of promoting religious activities in a state-run school.

The education department alleged the teachers encouraged Islamic practices—such as asking Hindu girls to wear hijabs and perform sajda—prioritized religion over academics, and created communal division, violating the Right to Education Act and Article 28 of the Constitution, which bans religious instruction in state-funded schools. Two block officers were assigned to investigate within seven days, and police filed an FIR under sections for public mischief and criminal conspiracy.

However, students denied being forced to wear religious attire, stating prayers were voluntary and all faiths were respected. One child said wearing a cap was a personal choice to avoid losing it. Suspended teacher Mohammad Anjar rejected the claims, asserting the school follows only the curriculum and welcoming the inquiry. Police are continuing their investigation based on evidence.
