Kanpur: Priyanka Jaiswal, the victim of the alleged suicide of a PhD student in her dorm room at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, had recently placed an order for two ropes from an internet marketing firm, according to inquiries into the incident. A thick nylon rope hanging from Priyanka’s hostel room ceiling was discovered to be her body. Priyanka, a native of Dumka in Jharkhand, enrolled in IIT Kanpur’s PhD programme in chemical engineering on December 29, 2023.
According to police, investigations are being conducted to determine what led the girl to take the drastic measure, but a whole picture won’t become apparent until the investigating officer has had extensive conversations with the deceased’s relatives.
“Two sets of rope—one heavy and the other thin—have been found at the location. A senior police officer with knowledge of the case stated, “She had placed an online order for them a few days prior. However, Abhishek Kumar Pandey, assistant commissioner of police, stated, “It appears that the researcher had been considering taking the drastic measure for the previous few days.”
Inspector Dhananjay Pandey of Kalyanpur police, who is looking into the suicide, stated that although an effort was made to ask her parents why they committed suicide, they are not in a position to comment.
On Friday, Priyanka’s father, Narendra Jaiswal, who works as an engineer in a coal mine, came to the city to retrieve her remains. In the last 30 days, there have been three instances of IIT-Kanpur students taking their own lives.
